Be Zen in November 2018

This past week I was rushing to pick up one of my children from yet another activity.  I was stuck in traffic and started thinking about all of the other things that I could be doing.  I was beginning to feel a bit tense and realized that indeed, my shoulders were up around my ears!  Then I noticed the car in front of me had a license plate that included the letters "BZEN".  "Wow," I thought, "Isn't that neat?  I need to try to BE ZEN.  I took a couple of deep breaths to try to relax a bit.  However, another minute later my mind was again wandering and starting to think about my to-do list!  Traffic started moving finally and a different car switched into the lane in front of me and what did I see?  I couldn't believe it, this other car also had a license plate with the letters "BZEN". "This must really be a message for me," I thought.  For the rest of the day I made a real conscious effort to slow my breath, my thinking and to be more present.  How busy have you been lately?  What kinds of self-care activities have you scheduled for yourself during this busy time of year?  Are you being called to "BZEN"?

Wellness tip for October: Apples

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away."  Research has shown this phrase to be true.  Apples are high in soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol. They also contain polyphenols, which can lower blood pressure and stroke risk.   The pectin in apples acts as a prebiotic which helps feed the good bacteria in the large intestine to protect against obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.  Apple skin contains a flavonoid that supports the immune system and contributes to reduced inflammation.  So make sure you eat the skin too!  This special apple that is from my own apple tree!  I hope that you can enjoy eating different varieties of locally grown apples on local farms this fall.
