Can you accept a compliment? Honestly, how do you react when you receive a compliment from someone else? Do you brush it off or say it wasn't really your doing or anyone would have done this? Many people, especially women, often feel very uncomfortable when they receive praise. Sometimes we have trouble feeling that it is okay to love ourselves that much! I have been reading a book, that a dear friend recommended, called, Year of Yes, by Shonda Rhimes, and this is one of the topics that she skillfully explores.
"I'm just lucky", "I had a lot of help", "I didn't really do all that", "I'm not that great", "It's not my doing, it's because you are here", "I'm so blessed", "thanks, but I...". Do you recognize any of these phrases? Instead of saying something like this, even if it is true, the next time you receive a compliment, try taking a deep breath and just say "thank you." This simple, gracious response can boost your self-esteem and also honours the person paying you the compliment.
