This past year one of my goals was to try a different kind of volunteering. Since the fall, I've been volunteering at the hot breakfast program at my son's school on one morning per week. As part of my volunteer training, I studied Food Safety with the Halton Region and I learned a few things that I'm implementing in my own kitchen. (See more on this below.) While it has been a challenge for me to get up at 5:30 a.m. to be at the school on time, the whole experience has been inspiring for me. I have enjoyed meeting new people. I'm always amazed to see how just a few volunteers can quickly make and serve nutritious food to help over 50 youngsters start their day on the right foot! I would love to hear from you about volunteer work that is important to you. What goals have you set and how are you planning to make a small difference in 2019? Food Safety Tip: We all know that it is important for our fridge and freezer to keep food cold to prevent growth of bacteria. Safe refrigerator temperatures are 4 degrees Celsius and lower, while freezers should be at -18 degrees Celsius. Consider getting a small thermometer and checking periodically. I did and I was surprised! Also remember not to overpack your refrigerator or freezer so that air can circulate.
