Now that spring is here we are noticing that the days are slowly starting to get longer. Even though it is still cool, there has been more sunlight, things are starting to grow again and what a welcome change that is! We seem to know inherently that sunlight is good for us, but do you know why? Sunlight boosts our mood and it encourages us to fall asleep faster at night. When specialized cells in the retina of the eye are exposed to sunlight, they give a signal that triggers the release of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of the neurotransmitters that plays an important role in boosting our mood and focus. Our bodies also use serotonin to make melatonin at night and melatonin helps us fall asleep! Did you know that another good way to boost your serotonin levels (even on a rainy day) is to have an Indian Head Massage or a Reflexology session? Vitamin D from the sun: All you need is 5-15 minutes in the sun 2-3 times per week to allow your skin to make the vitamin D you need for strong bones and a healthy immune system. The sunlight must penetrate the skin, so wearing sunscreen or clothing won’t result in much vitamin D production. However, if you are going to be outside in the sun for a longer period of time, then you will need to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 and/or wear a hat and long sleeves. Scientists are still researching when the best time of day is to absorb the sun's rays most efficiently and with minimal risk.
